Remembering Mel Weldon

My friend and mentor, Mel Weldon, passed away on Monday. Mel was a minister for over 60 years, and touched the lives of countless people. When I was first starting out in ministry, Mel and I worked at the same church.  He helped me understand ministry, and gave me advice that I still heed today. Mel was known for many things, including his wit, his counseling abilities, and his passion for preaching. His wife Sue also holds a special place in my heart. Mel and Sue had a great marriage, and he loved her with all his heart.  She did everything for Mel—cooked, cleaned, screened his phone calls, and supported him in every way.  When Sue passed some 20 years ago, Mel found himself alone, without his best friend. Not long after Sue passed, Mel came up to me with excitement in his voice and said, “I just learned how to make a glass of iced tea!” I never realized just how much Sue did for Mel until he told me that!

He and Sue are together again at last.

We will all miss you, Mel.

  1. I too was very sad to hear about Mel’s passings. In the mid 80′s I took a class from Mel at the church of christ in San Leandro. His class called the Dynamics for Achievement- Self-Managemnet Training. It really changed my life. Do you know if he continued to teach it? and did anyone carry on his work?

    • OMG, I am so moved right now, I just quoted Mel’s “My mind is a garden”, because I also attended his Self-management training seminar at the Church of Christ in San Leandro. My name is also Jennifer!! There are no accidents.

My friend was having some huge weeds pulled up from her garden that made me remember Mel’s prophetic words.. To this day they hold true and I quote him often. He used to say, you don’t have to plant weeds for them to grow…

      God bless his soul!!
      Jennifer 2!

  2. I took a class with a singles group from Stockton Church of Christ approximately 1987, and am looking for a copy of the cassette tape for meditation that he taught at our retreat…how he slowly counted backwards from 100…

  3. In 1981 he I took the Self-Management Training class that he taught at the Church of Christ in Martinez, CA. I was on 19 then and had just moved to Pleasant Hill from Portland, OR. I also had the opportunity to meet his daughter in Portland as she was doing some work for Columbia Christian College in 1990.

  4. Hello all.
I have the tapes to his program. If anyone is interested, I can maybe send a copy ( I just sent an email to the San Leandro church of Christ to see if I can make a copy on a CD/MP3 file because the material is copyrighted). If anyone is interested, send me an email at angel6792001@hotmail.com
