Easter Provides Opportunities
According to the latest Harris poll, 70 percent of Americans believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is higher than the percentage of Americans who believe in hell (62%), the devil (59%), or the theory of evolution (47%).
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the singularly most distinguishing factor in Christianity. No other major religion claims that their god was raised from the dead—not Buddhists, Confucians, Muslims, or Hindus. Christians make this claim for a number of reasons, the foremost being that Jesus was not just a god, but he was the God (John 1:1). In other words, he was not a created being, and he had the power to overcome death.
The resurrection of Jesus is what Christians celebrate every year at Easter. This does not mean that Easter is the only time we should celebrate the resurrection. In Romans 6:4, the apostle Paul says, “just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” Because Jesus lives, we have cause to celebrate our new lives every day!
Since Easter is the time most unchurched people attend church services, this coming Sunday provides us with more opportunities to reach others with the gospel than any other Sunday. Plan to celebrate the resurrection by meeting visitors at your church, inviting them to lunch, and sharing the new life you have in Jesus.
