How Can You Help the Poor?
Did you know:
Every 3.6 seconds someone in the world dies of hunger.
160 million children under the age of 5 are malnourished.
Three billion people barely live on $2 a day.
Recently my wife and I listened to a speaker that talked about world hunger. He talked about how he is ashamed that he lives in a nice house with an outlandish mortgage while children die every day because they are malnourished. He said that, if he lived in a smaller home with a smaller mortgage, he would contribute the rest to hungry children.
It convicted us.
We realized that we often take for granted our home, our cars, our money, and our way of life. Sure, we cared about the poor and hungry, but not enough to do anything about it. So we repented and decided to take action. We decided to sponsor a needy child. For $36 a month, we are helping a family in Brazil feed their daughter. Thirty-six dollars. That’s less than what I spend on lattes every month! Compared to what we have, own and spend, thirty-six dollars is inconsequential.
Will you help the poor?
“If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord—and he will repay you!” (Proverbs 19:17).
