10 Things to Remember When Marketing to Millennials
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary website has an article entitled, “10 Things to Remember When Marketing to Millennials.” Following are the ten things, with applications for reaching Millennials in our churches.
1. They’re not like you. This is an incentive to meet them where they are. In other words, we need to connect with them on their terms. This means expanding our strategies and becoming more technologically savvy. Ensuring that we have a church website is no longer enough. We need to actively communicate with Millennnials through texts, social networks, and Twitter. This is important in outreach as well as ongoing communication.
2. They’re team-oriented. Millennials are tribal; they like to work in groups. Biblical teaching should stress collaboration and teamwork. They can also be our best resource in reaching other groups of young people.
3. They’re more conservative. In every way. At the same time, they are very accepting of differences and have a strong sense of justice. They want to do their part to improve society. Millennials can be instrumental in helping us reach out and understand the disenfranchised and hurting.
4. They value privacy. Millennials are used to having their own possessions and space. Ironically, they tend to be more open online. Want to know the heart of a Millennial? Read his or her blog. They are creative and desire to express it. We need to give them opportunities in the church to put their creativity to work in worship, service, and marketing to others.
5. They’re tight with their parents. Many twenty-somethings are moving back in with their parents—not just because they are jobless—but also because they value family. They also listen to their parent’s advice. If we want to reach Millennials, we need to view them in context of the bigger picture—their families. For example, people who are the same age as their parents make great mentors and coaches to Millennials. We must train and challenge middle-aged adults to fill this need.
6. They’re straight-shooters. Millennials can spot insincerity in a heartbeat. They are not attracted to churches that “front.” We need to let Jesus shine through us, and be authentic in our interactions with Millennials.
7. They’re programmed. Millennials are used to schedules and multi-tasking. They are busy. Churches need to be cognizant of their time and offer services, classes and activities that complement—not clutter— their busy schedules.
8. They gravitate toward things that can be measured. A Millennial measures successful churches on what he can see, feel and touch. If we are not part of a mega-church, we can still reach Millennials by sharing our dreams to bless hundreds and thousands of people in the community and in the world. When Millennials can see that we are serious, they will join our outreach efforts.
9. They are privileged, but don’t see themselves that way. Millennials grew up having their own rooms, cars and computers. But they don’t see themselves as having extravagant lifestyles. Since they have so much, it takes a lot to impress them. We need to figure out the specific niche we want our church to be known for, and do it well.
10. They want to change the world. Millennials are the “We” generation. They want to serve and help others. Instead of increasing ministries that appeal to individualism, we need to shift our focus to ministries that emphasize selflessness and serving the community. Millennials will jump at the chance to change others.
