Share Heaven in 2011
What do you plan to share with others in 2011? Mark describes a compelling incident in the life of Jesus. A rich young man approached him and asked, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus told him to keep his commandments, to which the young man replied, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus said he lacked one thing. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” The text says, “the man went away sad, because he had great wealth.”
This is a lesson for all of us—regardless of our net worth. Jesus is asking us to share our possessions with others.
This was not a new teaching. Consider these words from Malachi 3:8-10:
“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.
“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’
“In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”
Do you understand the principle? The more we share, the more God will bless us! If we share a lot, God will “open the floodgates of heaven!” What an incredible promise! Here’s a point to ponder: the amount we share with others is in direct proportion to our faith.
We may think we don’t have extra to share, but let me ask a question: how many lattes do you buy a month? Did you know that you can feed a poor child for about 10 lattes?
We can share with people who are hurting and poor, non-profit organizations, missionaries, or a church. It really doesn’t matter who we share with; the important thing is to share what God has given us.
Why not resolve to share abundantly with others in 2011? Perhaps we know a single mother who cannot afford food for her children, have a friend who is in need of a new pair of shoes, or have a neighbor that needs gas for his car. We can share a little bit of heaven’s blessings with others this year. And God will bless us for it!
