Helping Fatherless Families
The importance of fathers cannot be overemphasized. As the Infographic below illustrates, people that grew up in fatherless homes are more more at risk for:
- Behavior problems
- Teen pregnancy
- Abuse and neglect
- Drugs and alcohol
- Low academics
Churches can play a huge part in keeping families together. They can educate families by offering marriage and parenting classes and counseling. They can listen without judgment.
What if fathers are not in the picture? (This is the situation for 1 out of 3 children in America). Churches can help single mothers by offering emotional and spiritual support, free babysitting, and classes for single-parent issues. Churches can also keep a current list of community resources that offer services to single parents such as advocacy groups, welfare and non-profit agencies, and low-cost or free counseling services.
Above all, churches should never judge, but welcome single-parent families with open arms.
